Frequently Asked Questions

Real questions real parents are asking —

answered with heart, clarity, and confidence.

Q

Why is alternative education important?

Most families aren’t looking for “alternative” — they’re looking for "better." Traditional schools were designed for the industrial age, not today’s dynamic world. Alternative education is important because it nurtures the whole child — academically, emotionally, and socially.

At Acton Academy Santa Barbara, we treat every learner as a hero on a journey. We believe real growth happens when students have freedom, responsibility, and purpose. That’s why our families choose a different path — one that leads to confidence, creativity, and long-term success.

Q

Is alternative school better than regular school?

It depends on your goals. If you want your child to be seen, challenged, and trusted — Acton may be the better fit. Traditional schools prioritize compliance and test-taking. We prioritize creativity, courage, and character.

Acton offers a modern blend of Montessori-inspired freedom, Socratic dialogue, and hands-on quests. Our learners don’t just absorb — they engage.

Q

Is Acton Academy Santa Barbara a religious school?

No. Acton Academy Santa Barbara does not promote any specific religion.

Q

Will Acton Academy Santa Barbara Grow?

Yes, our plan is to grow slowly and thoughtfully. We aim to expand into a larger elementary studio with 20 learners over the coming years. We also plan to introduce middle and high school levels in the future.

Q

Is Acton Academy Santa Barbara a Montessori School?

We respect and incorporate Maria Montessori’s philosophy but, we are not a Montessori school. We also use the latest interactive technologies, hands on projects and the Socratic Method for discussions.

Q

What is the Socratic method, and how is it used at Acton?

At Acton, we believe the best learning happens when students discover answers for themselves. The Socratic method is a way of learning through thoughtful questions and open dialogue, rather than lectures or memorization. Instead of giving answers, Guides ask powerful questions that help learners think deeply, make connections, and develop their own ideas. This builds critical thinking, confidence, and communication skills—preparing students to solve real-world problems with curiosity and courage.

Q

Will children be grouped into grades?

We believe that children learn best when working with children younger and older than themselves rather than split up into groups based solely on age. In addition to individualized curriculum, all ages of students work together in groups.

What if traditional school is preparing kids for a world that no longer exists?
